LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Students will get insight into works that deal with the complexities of being Muslim in the contemporary US from a variety of perspectives. They will better comprehend why issues like identity formation, assimilation, and cultural hybridity are of central importance to such texts and how Muslim people in the United States have struggled with these issues in the racialized political climate after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Students will learn to develop a more critical understanding of the American literary canon and gain some insights in American discourses on issues of race, religion, ethnicity, and gender.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
Short lecture inputs, close readings and detailed discussion of assinged texts.

How Does It Feel to Be a Problem? This is the question asked by Moustafa Bayoumi and other writers who explore the complexities of being Muslim in the racialized political climate of the contemporary United States. In this seminar, we will consider a range of such explorations, starting out with one of Bayoumi’s stories and excerpts from two autobiographies, Sara Saedi's Americanized and Amani Al-Khatahtbeh’s Muslim Girl. We will then move on to two novels, Shaila Abdullah’s Saffron Dreams and Mohsin Hamid, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, that deal with the Muslim American experience after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Watching Mira Nair’s film adaptation of The Reluctant Fundamentalist will give us an opportunity to discuss what it means when Hamid’s literary text gets transformed into a visual narrative and channelled through the lens of a female Indian director. Next, we’ll consider Omar El Akkad’s speculative novel American War, which invites readers to step into the shoes of the world’s radicalized displaced people by imagining a new civil war in a future United States ravaged by climate change. The last novel we will read, Diana Abu-Jaber’s Crescent, leads us away from typical post-9/11 tropes and into the microcosm of a Middle Eastern restaurant in Los Angeles and the complicated budding love life of its Iraqi-American chef.
