Inhalt/e
“Our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature” (Lakoff & Johnson 1980: 3).
The striking claim of conceptual metaphor theory is that metaphor is not only a poetic and rhetorical device but also a phenomenon of everyday language. In this class, we will explore the relation between language and metaphor, which will add to our understanding of the interplay of language and cognition. Conceptual metaphors occur in all types of language use, and participants will have the opportunity to investigate their functions in a variety of texts and genres such as political speeches, advertisements, commentary, news, and so on. Analyses can also go beyond language and focus on multimodal metaphors that emerge from a combination of image and text.
