Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Students are introduced to theoretical and practical issues in foreign language teaching. Research findings about second language acquisition and their implications for foreign language teaching are compared with the students’ own language learning experiences. The most common approaches to foreign language teaching are briefly introduced. Attention is drawn to ways of teaching grammar, vocabulary, and the four skills within foreign language pedagogy with a communicative orientation.

Examination information
Examination methodology
Attendance is mandatory. The course participants are expected to contribute actively during the class meetings. In order to do so, it is necessary to complete the self-study assignments as set by the course instructor and prepare relevant texts outside the class meetings. All self-study assignments will be announced in class and on Moodle. Missing a class is no excuse for insufficient preparation. Students need positive grades on both the term paper and the written exam to pass this course. Failing one of those two components leads to an overall fail grade for the course.

Possible exam questions are communicated continuously throughout the semester. The expected contents of the term paper are announced in class and on Moodle.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
The final grade depends on
- participation in class (10%),
- a term paper (45%), and
- a written examination (45%).
The final grade will be allocated according to this key:
A (Sehr Gut) = 100-93
B (Gut) = 92-85
C (Befriedigend) = 84-76
D (Genügend) = 75-67
F (Nicht Genügend) = 66-0
Students who discontinue attending this course without written notification by 31st March 2020 at the latest will receive a negative grade.
