Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

This course aims at introducing contemporary Irish drama (and theatre) within the background of major social, political and cultural developments that have taken place in Ireland from the 1950s to the present. Following a general overview of Irish drama of the earlier decades, the course will focus on the works of leading representatives of the period under discussion. To this end, selected major plays of contemporary Irish playwrights, such as Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Marina Carr, Martin McDonagh and Enda Walsh will be studied in detail, within their social, cultural and political context.  At the end of the course, students will have been familiarised with the major plays and playwrights of contemporary Irish drama, and will have developed an understanding of the importance of drama in Ireland as a major factor leading to societal change, as well.
