Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: 

- demonstrate knowledge of basic corpus terms and concepts; 

- demonstrate a competence in using online corpora and corpus analysis tools; 

- demonstrate knowledge of the basic quantitative procedures in interpreting corpus data; and 

- demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate current basic research in the field of corpus linguistics.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The classes will be mostly hands-on. In the first part of the course the typical class will include a discussion about the theory behind the construction and use of corpora. In the later stages the more practical details of how to use corpora and corpus search tools and how to construct and annotate a corpus will be addressed.

Prior knowledge expected

The students should have completed the Studieneingangs- und Orientierungsphase (including Introduction to Linguistics I), Grundstudium Linguistics (Introduction to Linguistics II and Development of English), Aufbaustudium Linguistics (Topics in Theoretical Linguistics, Topics in Applied Linguistics, Specialised Topics in Linguistics), and Fachliches Vertiefungsstudium Linguistics (Focus on Linguistics SE).

2.Practical Ass. 2: creation and use of own (small) corpora; and 

3. Research project:  bringing together all of the aspects of working with corpora.
