Intended learning outcomes

Ziel dieses Kurses ist es, den Studierenden die Entwicklung der britischen Literatur von den Anfängen bis heute näher zu bringen. Die Vertrautheit mit einflussreichen Autoren und Texten sowie die Fähigkeit, sie kritisch zu kontextualisieren, ist die Grundlage für nachfolgende Seminare im Bereich anglistischer Literaturwissenschaft .

Nach erfolgreichem Abschluss der Vorlesung sind die Studierenden gut gerüstet, um mit der britischen Literatur zu arbeiten, da sie die grundlegende Zusammenhänge zwischen Autoren, Texten und der Gesellschaft verstehen.

Die Vorlesung bietet Studierenden einen Überblick über die Literaturen der Britischen Inseln vom frühen Mittelalter bis zum Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts und deren historische und soziale Kontexte. Im Laufe der Vorlesung werden wichtige AutorInnen der britischen Literatur exemplarisch beleuchtet.

Intended learning outcomes

It is the aim of this course to make students understand the development of British literatures, from their very beginnings until today. A familiarity with influential authors and texts, as well as the ability to critically contextualise them, is the basis for all subsequent literary classes.

After the Survey, students will be well equipped to work with British literatures, as they understand connections between authors, texts, and contexts.

Course content

This lecture will give students an overview of British literatures, from the early Middle Ages to the early 21^st century. It will provide historical and social contexts, as well as focus on a selection of signature authors and texts for each of the eras treated.

Topics discussed are:

Old English Period, 500-1066

Medieval/Middle English Period, 1066-1485

The Renaissance, 1485-1660

The Restoration and the 18th Century, 1660-1780

The Romantic Period, 1780-1832

The Victorian Era, 1832-1901

The 20th Century - Modernisms

The 20th Century - Postmodernisms

21st Century British Literatures
