Intendierte Lernergebnisse
By the end of this course, students should be able to/have:
- actively participate in a debate
- deliver a well-structured, coherent and engaging presentation on a given topic
- understood different question typologies in order to ask effective questions
- learnt the basics of conversation analysis methodology

Extensive group work, workshops, online, self-study and assessment in class.
Inhalt/e
This class aims to improve students’ fluency in spoken English and develop students' ability to use the language for specific purposes.
Specific skills that will be developed throughout this course are:
- presentation skills
- ability to debate a broad range of current topics and issues
- formulating effective questions
- listening skills
- analytical skills
Key topics that will be covered throughout this course include:
- multilingualism in schools (with a focus on English as an Additional Language in UK schools)
- institutional talk
- foundations of conversation analysis
Literatur
Recommended reading will be given throughout the semester.
Prüfungsinformationen
Geänderte Prüfungsinformationen (COVID-19 Ausnahmeregelung)
30% Transcription and individual presentation (in class on 07/05/20 and 14/05/20): students either record their own, or find an example of, institutional talk in English (approx. 3 mins of talk) and transcribe and analyse it using the basic conventions of conversation analysis. Students present their analysis to the class by discussing its most interesting features.
40% Participation (throughout the semester): students receive an individual grade for their participation in group activities, including group debates and class discussions. For more information,please see the document on Moodle titled “Participation Requirements.”
30% Completion of Moodle activities (throughout semester): students are required to complete various short tasks on Moodle during the semester that are graded. Each individual activity contributes equally to an overall grade for this assessment.
