Intendierte Lernergebnisse

ATTENTION: STUDENTS MUST HAVE A PASSING GRADE FOR ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES IN ORDER TO TAKE THIS COURSE

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

- critically analyse an essay in terms of its structure and style 

- construct an essay plan 

- write a formal argumentative and compare and contrast essay implementing the structure and style taught in class

Group work, workshops, online, extensive self-study, writing assignments in class and written homework assignments.

Students are required to regularly read academic papers in English in order to develop their academic reading skills and acquire academic vocabulary and register.

Inhalt/e

This course focusses on academic writing and covers the following:

  • essay structure (introduction, main body and conclusion)
  • thesis statements
  • essay planning
  • argumentative essays
  • discussion essays
  • compare and contrast essays
  • critiquing skills 
  • proof reading
  • citing and referencing (inclu. quoting, paraphrasing and summarising)
  • style and features of formal academic writing (inclu. vocabulary, grammar and punctuation)

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Geänderte Prüfungsinformationen (COVID-19 Ausnahmeregelung)

25% Written homework assignment 1 (deadline on 04/05/20): this assignment is a written argumentative essay of 500 words to prove that students have mastered the basics of text organisation - introduction (including a strong thesis statement), paragraph structure (including appropriate topic and concluding sentences) and conclusion. Note that this assessment replaces the mid-term exam, more information will be made available on Moodle on 20/04/20.

30% Written homework assignment 2 (deadline on 06/07/20): this assignment is a written compare and/or contrast essay of 500 words to prove that students have mastered the basics of text organisation - introduction (including a strong thesis statement), paragraph structure (including appropriate topic and concluding sentences) and conclusion.

25% Written reflection (deadline 06/07/20): students are required to write a reflective text (drawing on examples from their work) on how they have developed their writing throughout the semester,and how they can transfer what they have learnt to other areas of their studies and personal lives. A template for the task will be available on Moodle from 15/06/20. Note that this assessment replaces the final-exam.

20% Completion of Moodle activities (throughout semester): students are required to complete various short tasks on Moodle during the semester that are graded. Each individual activity contributes equally to an overall grade for this assessment.
