Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- analyse and explain a range of grammatical features and structures using appropriate terminology
- both identify and produce the grammar structures taught in-class and studied at home
- accurately define and use target vocabulary, including a broad range of idioms, studied both in-class and at home.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Group work, communicative activities, extensive self-study, student presentations and progress tests.
Course content
This course focusses on the development of grammatical accuracy and lexical development and covers the following:
Grammar
- tense and aspect, modal verbs, linking verbs, passive voice, relative clauses, articles, subject-verb agreement and prepositions.
Vocabulary
- collocations and idiomatic expressions
- vocabulary development in a broad range of topic areas including the environment, crime and the media.
- the international phonetic alphabet

Examination information
Modified examination information (exceptional COVID-19 provisions)
25% Online assessment 1 (04/05/20): this will be an online assessment on Moodle in which students will need to complete a number of activities within a given time frame. The activities will be based on the grammar and vocabulary units covered in the first seven sessions of the course (all listed on Moodle).
30% Online assessment 2* (15/06/20): this will be an online assessment on Moodle in which students will need to complete a number of activities within a given time frame. The activities will be based on all of the grammar and vocabulary units covered throughout the course.
20% Written homework assignment (deadline 19/04/20): students are required to submit a written homework assignment (for further information see the end of the online session on articles). Note that this assignment replaces the delivery of a vocabulary lesson assessment.
25% Completion of Moodle activities (throughout semester): students are required to complete various short tasks on Moodle during the semester, which are graded. Each individual activity contributes equally to an overall grade for this assessment.
Examination methodology
- 2 x Progress tests consisting of a variety of questions types (cloze, multiple choice and short answer)
- Online activities
- Delivery of a fifteen-minute lesson on an assigned unit from the vocabulary course book
