Intended learning outcomes

have a basic understanding of the main issues, themes, and topics of American social and cultural history

be familiar with dominant and alternative discourses in and of American history, society, and culture

be able to apply their knowledge of American history, society, and culture in their studies of American literary and media texts

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The course is designed as a weekly lecture course.

Course content

The course aims to trace the major issues, topics, and themes of American culture from the colonial period to the present day. We will start out with a closer look at some of the United States’ founding documents and formative myths, and then go on to explore how the nation’s treatment of women and various minority communities has changed over time. In this context, we will pay particular attention to African American and Native American histories as well as to the U.S.’s changing immigration policies. In the second part of the semester, we will turn our attention issues surrounding migration and urbanization, and to the culture and media industries that have shaped American society and politics over time, among them Hollywood film, television, music, sports, and other forms of mass entertainment. Given current political developments, the course will also take time to investigate the U.S. presidency and the nation’s relation to its international partners in a historical perspective.

Literature

All relevant literature will be made available on Moodle on a weekly basis.
