Intendierte Lernergebnisse

By the end of this course students should be able to:

- understand and accurately use a broad range of business-specific vocabulary, studied both in-class and at home.

- prepare and deliver an engaging and informative presentation on a given topic

- communicate effectively on the telephone in English 

- write a well-structured and accurate email in English using the vocabulary and grammar studied throughout the course.

Group work, communicative activities, presentations, extensive self-study, listening, writing and speaking assessments.

Inhalt/e

This foundation class aims to develop students’ ability to communicate effectively in the English-speaking workplace.

Skills that will be developed throughout this course are:

  • presentation skills
  • telephone skills
  • writing skills (focus on writing emails)
  • grammar (inclu. tense and aspect, pronouns and adverbs)
  • subject-specific vocabulary

Topics that will be covered throughout this course include:

  • sustainability
  • sales and marketing
  • internships

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Geänderte Prüfungsinformationen (COVID-19 Ausnahmeregelung)

30% Presentation (ONLINE 23rd June): Individually, students will deliver a five-minute online presentation on two chosen sustainability strategies of a well-known international company. Each presentation must include an introduction and summary slide and use the subject-specific vocabulary studied in class. Presentation slides MUST be uploaded to Moodle. For more information on the requirements for this assessment, please see the grading rubric on Moodle under 26/05/20.

25% Written exam (deadline Monday 6th April): please see the session on Moodle on the 1st April for more information about this task.

25% Writing and listening exam (ONLINE 5th May): this assessment will now be based on the completion of writing and listening activities on Moodle; the topic of the assessment is “talking on the telephone.” More information will be available on the session on the 28th April. Note that you must complete these tasks on Tuesday 5th May 14:00-15:00.

20% Participation (throughout semester): an overall grade will be awarded for the completion of online work (submitted on time).
