Lerning about Biosphere Reserves. The United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) in 1971. It is an Intergovernmental Scientific Programme that aims to establish a scientific basis for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments. The worldwide network consists of 701 biosphere reserves in 124 countries.

Learning about Regional Development. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Nockberge & Kärntner Nockberge is one of them. The excursion will take place in the carinthian part of the reserve. The Biosphere Reserve Nockberge was established in 2012 as one of 3 Austrian BRs. MAB combines the natural and social sicences, economics and education to improve human livelihoods and the equitable sharing of benefits, and to safeguard natural and managed ecosystems, thus promoting innovative approaches to economic development that are socially and culturally appropriate, and environmentally sustainable.

Learning about Sustainability. Biosphere Reserves are model regions for sustainable development. They also contribute to the transition to green societies by experimenting with green development options such as sustainable tourism and trainings.
