Intended learning outcomes
The course will provide deep understanding of the relationship between digital culture, politics and youth, understanding of patterns of political communication and reception of new media within political context and ability to discuss these issues orally and in a written form. The course in addition requires active participation in seminar work on the selected research projects, creativity and self-initiative and critical contextualisation and comparison of selected problem topics.
Course content
This course is an advanced introduction to debates, empirical studies and several conceptual frameworks about the role of recent smart technologies, digital media and convergent media repertoires within the broader context of modern political culture. The purpose of the course, among others, is to provide and critically understand the complex intersections between several transformations digital media have brought to (public) communication, citizens engagement and political sphere from a narrower perspective that is focused primarily to youth as active users of recent new media. Nevertheless, the course begins with a longer tradition about digital political communication and public participation research that was once focused to several discussions about potentials of e-democracy and new participatory venues that would democratise citizens’ impact on politics. However, such optimistic visions were later on followed by many critical assertions, pointing the problems with the emergence of closed networked publics, networked individualism, hate-speech, online violence and other processes, that undermine instead to revitalise democracy.
Within such wider perspective, the course will deliberately elaborate major transformations and changeable forms of representations and choices made by political institutions, politicians, political parties within rapidly changeable technological platforms. In addition, the course will analyse the transformation of political campaigns through digital media, the ambivalent role of digital media in political communication, and critically evaluate new political platforms within the existing social media and online communication. Several case studies and major references will be discussed from the perspective of youth, asking, for instance, how and in what sense the youth as “digital natives” adopt and use recent smart devices in order to participate as digital activists or digital citizens on the local, national and global level. Such perspective will therefore require a fresh focus on concepts such as digital media, identity, engagement and participation, public sphere, consumption and creation, as well as theoretical and analytical engagement of students with selected publications in the most prominent journals from communication and new media studies.

Examination information
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
The final grade will consist of two equal parts:
a) Participation in seminar class discussion and group presentation, which will address a selected topic of the course content will constitute 50% of the final grade. Format and content of the presentation will be discussed during the first meeting of the course.
b) Final (individual) essay of 8 -10 pages (single-spaced, typed, 12-point font) on a selected topic is worth 50% of your grade. The list of topics and formal characteristics of the essay will be discussed during the first meeting of the course.
