LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The course explores visual representations of youth cultures through the prism of curatorial practice and gallery exhibitions. Its central part is devoted to the evolution of curatorial projects related to youth culture from beginning to the end. To this purpose, the whole curatorial process will be put under scrutiny, from the initial conceptualization and research to the choice, acquisition and layout of the actual exhibits along with the necessary organizational tasks like funding, marketing and locating the appropriate venue.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Key practical assignment, to envisage a concrete individual exhibition related to a certain aspect of youth culture, must be chosen by student and preapproved by the instructor. This project will contribute to the 60% of the final grade with the other 40% determined by class participation on the basis of pre-assigned readings.

Inhalt/e

Youth culture is a term used to designate (in)formal ways in which youth lifestyles, behaviours and interests are formed as well as to the policies used to shape them. Theoretically, it will be juxtaposed to related concepts like ‘generation’ and ‘counter-/sub-/culture’, which, due to their Western origin, need to be adopted to non-Western contexts. In that sense, of special interest will be issues of cultural transfer and the dynamic between dominant co-optative strategies and youth’s ability to imbue mainstream products with their own meanings. Historicallythe course will explore the emergence and growth of post-war youth cultures, starting from the “long sixties” when the youth became a relevant cultural and political agent, leaning on deeper social and economic transformations. We will analyze the key tension between youth consumerist desires and (radical) political ideas(encapsulated by Godard’s Children of Marx and Coca-Cola.)

The course elevates visual component into an essential dimension of contemporary youth cultures to the extent that these could not exist without it. This central place makes this image an ideal material for curatorial treatment. Accordingly, we will identify an array of visual representations of youth cultures from printed sources, graphic design, photography to film-making and new digital media, analyzing them in the light of their potential/place in the gallery context. The course will also test how this nexus played out on a specific case study: on youth cultures in socialist Eastern Europe, where due to the over-political treatment of youth, their visual representations displayed distinct qualities. We will dissect youth representations created in the specific context of limited consumerism, antagonism to the West and periodic state-sponsored avant-gardism, exposing in the process the interplay of similarities and differences with comparable representations from the West.

Among others, the course will analyze visual side of popular music (record covers, posters, leaflets, fashion) or specific aesthetical codes linked to distinct (sub)cultures, keeping in mind whether they are produced ‘from below’ or manufactured externally (i.e. mainstream media/cinema representations of youth vs specific youth media/films created by the youth).Along with artefacts traditionally ignored by curators, attention will be placed on unorthodox research methods that utilize DIY techniques and informal archives curated by insider participants and fans.
