Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

  • to understand the productions and the negotiations of transnational space about Islam and women.
  • to define and describe the basic theories and feminist approaches that deal with Islam in transnational space
  • to acquire an in-depth knowledge of interpretive approaches in the study of Islam, gender and sexuality
  • to obtain critical thinking for the contemporary issues of social justice, gender equality and diversity

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Teaching methodology embraces a variety of techniques—such as lectures by the professor, discussions, small-group activities and mini-presentations and analysis of cases by the students. There will be short films and other media communications for which student will be asked to give their short commentaries, self-reflection, and analyses. All these activities and the participation will be considered if the class is taught in the form of a Vorlesung mit Proseminar or as Proseminar. Especially in the case of the latter, a deepening discussion of the topics will expected in the evaluation of the students.

Course content

In the face of a larger framework of Islam and politics, the course looks at gender and Islam in transnational perspective and primarily focuses on ethnographic examples in transnational space between the Near East and Europe. The course assumes that the transnational imaginary is not a linear transformation and transportation of concepts, discourses and practices from one place to> the other, but rather it is a space that presents us with a complex set of relations, enabling the production of new meanings, discourses, and identities in the context of gender and Islam. Throughout the semester our emphases will be on, but not limited to, the notions of gender regimes, secularism, and Islam; relationship between Islamic feminisms and others; (Islamic) women’s movements in trans-national space; Islamic movements and women; everyday practices of (Muslim) women’s subjectivities, and their personal and political aspirations in the context of transnationality.

  • In the first part, we will survey the theoretical  understandings of the concept “transnational space” in cultural anthropology.
  • In the second part, we will survey the debates between  Islamic feminisms and other women’s movements, including women’s rights and Islam.
  • The third part will cover the everyday lives of men and women, their parenting, their desires and wishes in transnational space.
  •  The last part will focus on Islamophobic and Islamophilic  sentiments with references to (post)colonialism.
