Intended learning outcomes

Students will practice and refine their ability to:

Course content

As English has become the global language of scientific communication, publication, and exchange in the technical sciences and economics, there is an increasing demand for competent writing in English within university courses. It is, therefore, especially important to acquire and practice English writing capabilities. This course teaches the basics of scientific writing in English – understanding texts and how to use them in your own writing, the writing process itself, rhetoric’s place in scientific writing, text organization and structure, and the language itself – which will then be put into practice through the creation and presentation of a brief but complete scientific paper in APA format.

Complete written paper(s), oral presentation of paper, and participation during course

Examination topic(s)

The final paper will demonstrate the ability to apply the content of the course in your own brief research and writing. 

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

The final paper will be assessed on its content, organization, form, and style and will be worth 50% of the overall course grade.  The remainder of the course grade will be based upon other writing tasks, in- and out-of-class exercises, and class participation.
