Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

  • They will know various research approaches and outcomes of gender research/ Feminist Studies/ Gender Studies, as well as relevant concepts and terms within their own scientific field.
  • They will be able to interconnect and analyse gender within other concepts, such as sexuality, nationality, class and race.
  • They will have the tools to critically discuss texts of other disciplines from a gender research/ Feminist Studies/ Gender Studies’ perspective.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Lectures intercepted by discussions and collective readings and image analyses, as well as film and media analyses will provide the basis for a student centred discussion, with a special focus on the students’ interest and choice of topics.

Course content

The aim of this lecture is to give students an overview about central aspects and theories within the interdisciplinary field of Gender Studies/Feminist Studies. Relations of gender and culture as well as gender and society, with a primary focus on intersectionality are at the centre of this course. Depending on the participant’s academic disciplines, emphases will be laid on text discussions and situated knowledge. Furthermore the lecture is based on film and media analysis.

In the first part of the course the concept of “Doing Gender” (West, Zimmerman 1987) will be presented and discussed on the basis of the film example “Orlando” (Sally Potter 1992). We will reason by means of different film scenes the possibilities of “female spectatorship” (vgl. Mulvey 1975; Bergstrom; Doane 1989; de Lauretis 1987). Using “Feminist Criticism of Film” (Smelik 1999) the historic development of gender research, as well as Feminist Studies and Gender Studies will be explored.

In the second part the use of gender-equal language and situated knowledges (Haraway 1988) will provide the groundwork for critical readings, feminist methods (vgl. Jaggar 2008) and discussions about postcolonialism, diversity and intersectionality. In the third part of the lecture, texts, selected according to participant’s wishes, will be discussed in greater detail.
