Intended learning outcomes

Nach erfolgreicher Absolvierung des Kurses haben die Teilnehmer/innen grundlegende Kenntnisse im Bereich Mensch-Computer Interaktion, Usability, und des benutzer-zentrierten Gestaltungsprozesses erworben, sowie die zentralen Methoden und Techniken des benutzer-zentrierten Gestaltungsprozesses kennengelernt.

Vortrag und Diskussion, schriftliche Arbeit und mündliche Präsentation, schriftliche Prüfung (ohne Unterlagen).

Course content

Der Kurs ist in zwei Teile gegliedert: der ersteTeil bietet eine Einführung zur Mensch-Computer Interaktion und Usability, der zweite Teil behandelt grundlegende und häufig verwendete Methoden und Techniken des benutzer-zentrierten Gestaltungsprozesses, wie z.B.: A/B Test, Card-Sorting, heuristische Evaluierung, das Kano-Modell, kontrollierte Experimente, Methode der kritischen Ereignisse, Personas, Storyboards, Tagebuchverfahren, und Usability-Tests.

Literature

Fast alle einführenden Lehrbücher über Mensch-Maschine Interaktion, Usability, Interaktive Systeme und Gestaltung von graphischen Benutzungsschnittstellen behandeln die Grundlagenthemen und viele der Methoden dieses Kurses. Einige solcher Bücher können von der LV-Leiter ausgeborgt werden. Die Universitätsbibliothek hat eine große Auswahl an Büchern, wie z.B.:

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this class, students should have: 

  • acquired a broad theoretical understanding of the methods used  in Human Centered Computing/Design
  • acquired a good knowledge about the user-centered design process 
  • acquired practical skills in applying a selected sub-set of the methods used in the user-centered design process 
  • extended their vocabulary with the relevant domain-specific vocabulary

Lectures + discussions, exercises, and student presentations, written exam (closed book).

Course content

This class is split in two parts. The first part provides an introduction to human centered computing (HCC) and human centered design (HCD) with a focus on the ultimate goal thereof: to build digital artifacts that are easy, efficient and pleasurable to work – or interact – with. In the second part we will focus on the user-centered design process and discuss and get familiar with several methods and techniques  (e.g., A/B Test, Heuristic Evaluation, Controlled Experiments, Personas, Storyboards, Diary Studies, and Usability Tests) used to achieve the ultimate goal of HCC/HCD.

Most introductory books on human-computer interaction, interactive systems, usability, interface design, etc. include the basics we will cover early on in the class, as well as some of the methods we will explore later on.
