Intended learning outcomes
- ... vertiefen ihre Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten in der Recherche, Sichtung, Bewertung und im Verständnis wissenschaftlicher Literatur;
- ... stellen ein (ihnen neues) Thema/Spezialgebiet wissenschaftlich fundiert, sorgfältig, präzise, verständlich für die KollegInnen, in eigenen Worten, Bildern, Folien dar;
- ... lernen wissenschaftliche Artikel und auch Arbeiten ihrer KollegInnen kritisch zu lesen und einzuschätzen;
- ... verbessern ihren Vortragsstil;
- ... lernen ausgewählte Ansätze zu "Video Distribution over the Internet" kennen.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Course content

Starting from a given research paper (or a few papers), the students will enhance their skills to search, read, evaluate, understand, and summarize relevant literature on a new scientific topic. They will study this new topic to a degree that they will be able to present it to an interested, but non-expert audience in a readily accessible manner, both in writing (seminar paper) and in a presentation (seminar talk).
In detail, the students will ...
- ... enhance their skills in searching, reading, evaluating, and understanding scientific publications;
- ... present a new topic/area to their fellow students in a scientifically thorough and precise, yet readily accessible way, in own words, figures/tables, and presentation slides;
- ... learn how to critically read and assess both scientific publications as well as the seminar papers of fellow students (by means of a peer review process);
- ... practice and improve on oral presentations;
- ... get to know selected approaches on "Video Distribution over the Internet".
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Starting point: one or a few research papers on a selected topic
Reading of the article(s) and of further relevant scientific literature, writing of a seminar paper that presents the essential concepts of the article(s) in a scientifically sound way, presentation of seminar paper
Assessment and feedback of seminar paper by peer students and professor
Course content
This seminar is devoted to discuss "Video over Future Networks", by means of a recent Special Issue of the scientific journal IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (Oct. 2017), co-edited by the course instructor. Results of recent research, as reported in this issue, will be presented and discussed in the course of this seminar. The students may choose the special topic they are most interested in, in agreement with the instructor. The seminar will be held (and can be done) in English or in German, depending on the language skills/preferences of the students.
