Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
It is the aim of this course to make students understand the development of British literature, from its very beginnings until today. A familiarity with influential authors and texts, as well as the ability to critically contextualise them, is the basis for all subsequent literary classes.
After the Survey, students will be well equipped to work with British literature, as they understand connections between authors, texts, and society.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
Lecture and short in-class discussions of selected example texts.
Course content
This lecture will give students an overview of British literature, from the early Middle Ages to the early 21st century. It will provide historical and social context, as well as focus on a selection of signature authors and texts for each of the eras treated.
Topics discussed are:
- Old English and Middle English literature
- Tudor and Stuart literature
- Restoration and Augustan literature
- Romantic poetry and prose
- The Age of Sages
- Victorian poetry and novel
- Late Victorian literature
- The World Wars and Modernism
- Non- and Postmodernisms
- Post-Imperial literature, Genre fiction

Students will not be expected to buy any additional material.
Examination information
Examination methodology
Written exam with combinations of multiple choice and open answers. There will also be a short essay available as a bonus option that offers students a choice of topic and that replaces the question combination with the fewest total points.
Examination topic(s)
Only material discussed in class will be part of the exam. There is one combination of a MC and an OA question per lecture session. Students will also have the option to write a short essay about one text of their choice from all of British literature.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
MC questions ask students to reproduce basic information from the sessions. OA questions require the ability to contextualise and critically reflect upon texts and authors. The Bonus Option gives every student the opportunity to bring in their special interests in British literature and to make up for weaknesses elsewehere. (Being human, no-one can be expected to know ALL of British literature by heart after all...)
