***Notification from February 26th: This course is already full, please register for the parallel proseminar: 552.031 Introduction to Literary Studies 1b.***

--- -

Please, if you've been admitted to this class, do attend the first session on March 2nd when all necessary preliminaries will be discussed!

Additional information: This class lasts for 3 hours (combining two sessions per unit), but is held until the end of May only (last time: May 25th 2018); The first session is scheduled for March 2nd; This is due to the fact that the teacher is also a writer and will be leaving for a research-journey in the process of composing her next novel then.

All actual class-dates and a syllabus will be made available to you in the first session on March 2nd (e.g. no class on March 16th);

This class is aimed at developing a basic understanding of the most crucial differences between genres and of the possibilities of how to analyze texts, plus an insight into the various approaches to the interpretation of literary as well as cultural texts (which may have a multicultural, global validity);

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Lectures will be combined with students' contributions: active participation/discussions, sharing thoughts, ideas, perspectives related to empathy and identity, occasional brief group-work, multimedial input etc.

Inhalt/e

Class starts on March, 2nd.

"Introduction to Literary Studies 1" was devised as an introductory class which is offered to point to the many faces of literature. Looking right into them might be challenging, yet it is ever so enriching. It will  be beneficial for you to be familiarized with a variety of literary genres, techniques, stylistic features, concepts, theories active in literature and culture studies.

We will focus on the texts' origins, the reception of written works on the part of the audience, the importance of context and the potential of changes in the process of understanding and interpreting texts that are brought along by a changing context.

For a successful completion of this class, students are required to write an essay (approx. 400 words) on a certain topic, related to certain genres and contexts; Furthermore, there will be one quiz (short-answer questions, maybe combined with multiple-choice ones, no more than 10 altogether; the questions will be well-discussed in advance);

Topics:

  • prose, fiction in its abundance

  • poetry in its many forms, yet with different functions

  • drama

  • other literary genres (e.g. essay etc.)

  • intertextuality (when a text refers to another text and/or its author/s)

  • narrative: forms, functions, effects, narrative situations

  • ways to conduct analyses of texts rooted in various genres

  • context and its potential to modify our ways of (re)interpreting texts

  • literary theory/ cultural theory

  • What does literature mean to us today?

  • How have our perspectives and paradigms of thinking about literature changed over time?

  • ... and more ...
