Intendierte Lernergebnisse

After the Survey, students will be well equipped to work with American literature in later classes, as they understand the connections between texts, as well as texts and society.

Lecture and in-class discussion of examples.

Inhalt/e

As an introductory lecture course, this class provides students with an overview of American literary history and an introduction to the diverse range of literary production in the United States. It will attend to both dominant more marginal(ized) literary voices, ranging from discovery narratives and the early colonial period to the present day. We will critically engage with the notion of the American literary canon and also reflect on a range of approaches and theories that scholars have used in order to analyze and make sense of the texts included in it.

Required text:

Klarer, Mario. 2014. A Short Literary History of the United States. London: Routledge.

All primary texts and other relevant literature will be made available on Moodle on a weekly basis.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Written exam with combinations of multiple choice and open answers. There will also be a bonus option available that replaces the topic with the fewest points.
