Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Learn the essential terminology for your literary study programme at the department of English. Understand what it means to read texts academically and how central methodology is applied to analyse and interpret literary works. Expand your understanding to different media formats, ranging from poetry and prose to film, video games, and graphic novels. Practice your skills in discussions and applied analysis throughout the semester and explore the unique historical and sociocultural background of each discussed artwork.

At the end of the semester, you will possess an academic core vocabulary and foundational insights in the research methods of literature and culture studies to bolster yourself for subsequent courses.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Lecture sessions with in-class discussions and analytical exercises.

Course content

This lecture gives students an overview of core fields relevant to English and American Studies and the necessary concepts to discuss and analyse them adequately. After an introduction to academic reading strategies, it discusses the following fields and specific terminologies:

  • Poetry
  • Drama
  • Short stories
  • Prose
  • Graphic Novels
  • Film
  • Video Games

The works to be discussed will be selected to represent a broad array of fields that are culturally relevant to the seminar (i.e. of British, South African, US-American, or Canadian origin, or hold a relevant position in migration- or border-culture)

Literature

The lecture draws its content and definitions from various core authors, texts and academic dictionaries. Shorter texts and secondary sources are provided on Moodle as necessary. However, students ought to purchase the following primary texts in advance:

Examination information

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Examination methodology

Mandatory to all participants:

A 15-minute oral exam at the end of the semester. The exam’s content is explained in exam topics.


Mandatory to Game Studies and Engineering master students:

A 20-minute oral exam at the end of the semester. This exam covers the mandatory extent with the addition of the student’s findings and insights from the participation in at least one critical game lab.

Critical game labs are an extracurricular activity programme held on a monthly basis. In the case of Game Studies and Engineering students, at least one of the critical game labs must be completed with a 1000-word-essay (see exam topics). Game lab dates to be announced.

Examination topic(s)

All participants:

Students are expected to correctly apply the vocabulary of three thematic fields of the lecture in a one-on-one, face-to-face discussion with their lecturer. They may freely choose their exam fields from the seven fields listed in course information. Their appropriate usage of terminology is examined in context of the readings from the lecture and, to a minor degree, in context of works unknown to the student (see exam mode)


Game Studies and Engineering master students:

In addition to the general exam content, Game Studies and Engineering master students must prepare their insights and findings from one critical game lab, based on the 1000-word-essay, as an additional exam field. The 1000-word-essay must be based on one of the games discussed in a critical game lab. It must examine a specific feature of the game, use adequate terminology to describe it, and, most importantly, make correct use of the Chicago Manual Style citation format and thus, be free of plagiarism.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

The oral exam tests the following key competences:

  • Content (40%): Students ought to apply terms correctly in analysis, to provide fitting examples, to argue coherently, to link their knowledge to theory (if applicable) and to demonstrate an abstract understanding of the key terminology learned.
  • Flexibility (40%): Students ought to handle the lecturer’s questions, to compare different topics, to rudimentarily apply their knowledge to new contexts, and to critically reflect on the meaning of the terminology they learned.
  • Language Skill (20%): Students ought to present their skills fluently and without slipping into German.
