Intended learning outcomes

(1) What is Literature? Literature as a developing field of discourse;

(2) Gaining familiarity with theoretical approaches to literary studies;

(3) Gaining familiarity with the major literary genres;

(4) Literature as aesthetic discourse;

(5) Film and literature;

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

(1) In-depth discussion of texts in class;

(2) Teacher-led projects;

Course content

(1) What is literature?

(2) The Sonnet tradition in anglophone literatures;

(3) Versions of Romanticism;

(4) Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes;

(5) Critical approaches to literature;

(6) Case study: Dead Poerts Society;

(7) Introduction to the analysis of narrative texts;

(8) Realism and modernism: James Joyce (Dubliners)

(9) Postmodernism and beyond: Julian Barnes, Doreen Baingana, Chitra Banerjee Divakuruni;

Prior knowledge expected

This is a course for first semester students of English.

Literature

All the texts to be discussed will be included in the course reader.
