Course content

The class deals with signal processing for communication systems. Focus is given to the physical layer and the use of signals to model and analyze the full transmission chain. Analog and digital modulation will be explained as well as key algorithms as the optimal receiver and equalization. The student will become familiar not only with communication systems but also will acquire familiarty with deterministic and stochastics signals and processing of data which has application in many different fields of information and communication technology.

Topics

  • Introduction to signal processing and physical layer communications
  • Overview of signals, stochastic processes and systems
  • Complex signals and base band representation of systems
  • Communication medium: examples of wireline/wireless channels and noise
  • Principles of analog modulation: linear modulation, quadrature modulation, AM, FM
  • Quantization: uniform and optimal quantization of analog signals
  • Orthonormal functions representation of signals in digital modulation
  • Digital modulation and the optimal receiver in a noise channel
  • Transmission in dispersive channels: maximum likelhood sequence estimation (MLSE)
  • The Viterbi algorithm in the context of MLSE
  • Linear equalization: zero forcing digital equalizer and whitening filter
  • MMSE equalization and Wiener digital filter
  • Principles of channel estimation: the LMS algorithm
