Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
As the name of the class states, the focus is on Presentation and Communication. Students therefore practise speaking and writing in a variety of settings: individually (writing) ,with a partner, in a small group, to a large group or class (speaking). This requires understanding of the notion of text types and text purpose. In all cases, we are looking to raise the quality of control and accuracy of spoken and written expression.
Please note: students have given feedback that they were not advised that the writing component (portfolio, see below) was so demanding. With the change in the curriculum in 2012 the ECTS points available were reduced to two, and the number of hours taught were halved.
This course is also creditable for students studying for the Sustainability Certificate.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
As with English for Computing 1, the main emphasis is on spoken interaction in the classroom (Developing Learner Dialogue).
Students are given broad tasks to complete, and are responsible for knowing and managing the content of what they are saying. Students regularly give positive feedback on this aspect of the course, namely that student choice keeps the presentations interesting.
Weekly written submissions (Job application + CV, Abstract, Translation, Program Description, Academic Essay) are read and returned by the teacher. The student corrects and collects the texts and puts them into their portfolio, a formal demonstration of their writing skills in English.
Course content
The presentations and the portfolio texts should be on a topic or issue of Computer Science or Technical Mathematics. The teacher will give more information about the structure or style of the different text types.
Literature
Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English; Longman Language Activator (available in the Self-Access Centre);
Examination information
Examination methodology
Grades are given for the presentation, the portfolio, attendance and contribution, and language quality. The Academic Essay is used as the final measure of the student's language performance.
Examination topic(s)
These have been determined by the students themselves, where necessary in consultation with the teacher. The form or structure of the text types are part of their content, and students should demonstrate their understanding of this.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
The assessment criteria are one level stricter than for English for Computing 1. I.e., a student who gained a 3 in English for Computing will receive a 4 for Presentation and Communication, unless they raise their level of language quality. In Presentation and Communication this means maintaining contact with the teacher throughout the semester, and discussing issues in advance.
