Intended learning outcomes

The aim of the course is two-fold:

(1) to improve general and academic speaking skills by practicing speaking on a regular basis and by raising awareness about pronunciation and other central features of speaking, with a special focus on discussion and presentation skills as well as pronunciation and general language proficiency (i.e., fluency, grammatical accuracy and lexical range) and

(2) to practice and develop listening skills in English through exposure to a number and variety of authentic listening materials during and outside of class. The course will also involve the discussion of various theoretical insights on listening.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

lecture and practice (listening and speaking skills)
student contributions on pertinent topics
self-study and workshops

Course content

Listening component:

- advanced listening comprehension exercises
- listening for gist, specific information, details
- identifying speaker's attitude, degree of certainty, function or purpose
- making inferences and drawing conclusions
- listening to academic lectures

Speaking component:

- presentation skills
- participating in academic discussions
- summarizing contents
- expressing views
- responding to questions
