Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
(1) Basic familiarity with key issues in foreign language teaching;
(2) Basic familiarity with the basic ideas informing communicative language teaching/learning;
(3) Insight into how languages are learnt;
(4) Linking theoretical insight to concrete practical examples.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
(1) In-class discussion of key issues and perspectives;
(2) Model examples to show how theoretical perspectives can be linked to concrete practical examples.
Course content
(1) A historical perspective on English language teaching;
(2) Principles of communicative language learning/teaching;
(3) From communicative competence to intercultural communicative competence;
(4) Teaching vocabulary and grammar in communicative contexts;
(5) Key issues in Second Language Acquisition research;
(6) Teaching the four skills in communicative contexts;
(7) Learner autonomy and learner differentiation;
(8) The Common European Framework for Languages and its impact on ELT.
