Intended learning outcomes
To give students a basic historical understanding of the varieties of English and of its phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical peculiarities.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
The course will take the form of lectures plus an application-oriented part, i.e. the contents presented in the lectures will be practised by using a variety of texts Old English: (Poetic texts: Beowulf: Opening lines, ship-burial, Beowulf´s fight with Grendel, swimming match with Breca; Old English Riddle; Prose texts: translation of the Bible: the Creation; Anglo-Saxon Laws, Medical texts; Ohthere`s voyage to the Baltic (funderal rites in Estland) ; Middle English: Geoffrey Chaucer`s Canterbury Tales (parts of General Prologue; Nuns`Priest´s Tale, Reeve`s Tale)
Course content
English as an Indo-European language: family tree of the relevant IE languages; Britain as a Roman colony; beginning of Germanic invasion: consequences for the Celtic population; settlement history of the Germanic tribes (beginning of Old English) , Christianisation (hist. of writing system);
Scandinavian invasions, King Alfred`s role; influence of Scandinavian on English; 1066: William and the Norman Conquest: beginning of Middle English period, Anglo-Norman dominance, the role of (Anglo-Norman and Central) French as the official language of England (e.g. use of French in schools; French influence on English); re-establishment of English as official language; Chancery standard; introduction of printing by William Caxton, Early Modern English: Shakespeare ; Authorized version Bible; rise of American English; 1700. –Modern English: Dr. Johnson Dictionary of the English Language; New English (=Oxford English) Dictionary; 17/18th century: Australian English and other “Englishes”
