Intended learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to give students an understanding of the major literary genres with focus on the similarities and differences between each, to develop their analytical skills and to introduce students to literary and cultural theory. Furthermore, students will be made familiar with different methods of interpretation of literary texts in light of literary theory.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

The class will be conducted through lectures, class discussions and group work.

Course content

*Class discussion: What is literature? What is (literary) text?

*Introduction to major literary forms:

-prose as a literary genre

-forms of fiction: e.g. the short story, novella, novel, myth

-forms of non-fiction: e.g. biography, diary, journal, essay

-poetry as a literary genre

-drama as a literary genre

*Introduction to literary and cultural theory
