Intendierte Lernergebnisse

After successful completion of the module, a student will have applied various supply chain planning tools and techniques in a real-world business simulation. • Students will have worked in teams to select, apply and evaluate common quantitative supply chain planning techniques including demand forecasting, master planning, production planning, distribution planning and order promising. • Students will have experienced and solved issues of hierarchical planning on the interfaces between different functions. • Students will have tested different approaches to solving goal conflicts between functions in an organisation. • Students will have experienced and improved problems related to functional organisation within teams and effective management control mechanisms. • Finally, students will have effectively managed the supply chain planning process following the S&OP process down to execution production planning level of a realistic bottling plant.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The course follows a two-step approach: In the first part students study theoretical concepts, tools and techniques of supply chain planning based on pre-reading material, in-class lectures, case discussions and in-class exercises. In the second part of the module students have the opportunity to apply all concepts in a business simulation and case study of an Austrian drink manufacturer (DrinkCo).

Inhalt/e

Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) has emerged as a key cross-functional planning activity in many organisations. Once an effective S&OP process has been established, decisions made by senior managers must be put into action effectively. This module is aimed at providing an opportunity to explore the process of operationalizing decisions made during an S&OP process from master planning down to production planning, sequencing and scheduling. Planning the supply chain is an applied process. Additional to conventional learning approaches such as case studies and classroom discussions, this module will place strong emphasis on “learning by doing”. A central element to this module is a competitive computer-based business simulation of a medium sized drink manufacturer and bottling company. This business simulation and the supporting case study which have been designed by the module leader have been applied successfully in graduate programme teaching and learning. Small teams are being made responsible for different planning functions in a company and take over planning tasks such as demand planning, demand fulfilment, master planning, material and workforce planning, production planning and scheduling, and distribution planning.

Lehrziel

Students not only gain technical skills of supply chain planning such as the application of inventory planning and management science techniques (forecasting, linear programming, heuristics) in a practical context but will also experience and discuss management issues such as effectively managing interfaces, resolving goal conflicts between different functions and managing short term interventions due to demand and supply uncertainties.
