This course is part of the STEOP and aimed at providing first-semester students of English and American Studies with a basic understanding of literary analysis, interpretation, and terminology, as well as with a general overview of the field of literary studies.Topics
- • What is literature? What is a literary canon? What is literary studies?
- • Overview of the main literary genres (fiction, poetry, drama)
- • Introduction to literary terminology
- • Introduction to a number of critical approaches to studying literature
Teaching objective
In this course, students will… • become familiar with the terminology of literary analysis; • be introduced to the main literary genres and their basic characteristics; • learn about a number of common theoretical approaches to studying literature; • explore a number of literary texts from different periods and genres; • learn how to become attentive and reflective readers of literature. “I hope to show in the process that critical analysis can be fun, and in doing so help to demolish the myth that analysis is the enemy of enjoyment.” - Terry Eagleton in How To Read Literature (2014, x)Other materials
