Class starts on March, 7th, 08:30 "Introduction to Literary Studies 1" was devised as an introductory class which is offered to point to the many faces of literature. Looking right into them might be challenging, yet it is ever so enriching. It will be sustainable and beneficial for you to be familiarized with a variety of literary genres, techniques, stylistic features, concepts, theories active in literature and culture studies. We will focus on the texts' origins, the reception of written works on the part of the audience, the importance of context and the potential of changes in the process of understanding and interpreting texts that are brought along by a changing context. For a successful completion of this class, students are required to write an essay (approx. 400 words) on a certain topic, related to certain genres and contexts; Furthermore, there will be two short quizzes (one mid-term, one at the end, short-answer questions combined with multiple-choice ones; the questions will be well-discussed in advance;);Topics
- prose, fiction in its abundance
- poetry in its many forms, yet with different functions
- drama
- other literary genres (e.g. essay etc.)
- intertextuality (when a text refers to another text and/or its author/s)
- narrative: forms, functions, effects, narrative situations
- ways to conduct analyses of texts rooted in various genres
