Course Information

Course content

Language and therefore literature are constantly evolving. From the beginnings of English literature in the Middle Ages over the rise and fall of the British Empire and to contemporary national traditions of literature, we see constant change and development. This evolution is often about a struggle for power or a rearing up to be heard as a nation or people. This class will give an overview of the development of literatures in English during different epochs and within the geographical boundaries of the Anglosphere. It will emphasize how most of these literatures formed under colonial regimes and how various peoples found their own voices. The class puts particular weight on the great variety and diversity of literatures in English and the range of national traditions like British, Irish, US-American, Canadian and Australian literature.
