Course content

How the approximately 800 years of anglophone histories and cultures impacted on the creative writing of that world. How social changes were demanded, documented or opposed by literary artists. How the struggle for individual freedom was supported and described by them and how the sum of all these processes can be subsumed under the heading of "Modernization."

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

Lecture input, occasional questions & debate. As in any "KU" course, you will be asked to prepare for each session, usually by tackling the respective chapter in the Course READER

How the approximately 800 years of anglophone histories and cultures impacted on the creative writing of that world. How social changes were demanded, documented or opposed by literary artists. How the struggle for individual freedom was supported and described by them.

  • From Chaucer to the Renaissance: Henry VIII and sonnettering; poetry as national discourse
  • Shakespeare as a human being - and writer; a close look at his poetry
  • His greatest plays, King Lear in particular. On to Jacobean Tragedy
  • The Metaphysicals. Puritanism and its culture: John Milton. The Restoration and its theatre revival.
  • The Enlightenment (a.k.a. Augustan Age) and the romantic rebellion against it
  • The 19th Century: from Jane Austen to Victorianism and moving towards literary Modernism
  • British Modernism (J.Joyce!) and the 20th C, also in theatre matters
  • Colonial American Literature, The Captivity Narrative, Cotton Mather, Phyllis Wheatley
  • AmLit from the Revolution to ~ 1880 (J. Fennimore Cooper,Dickinson and Whitman)
  • Post-Civil War writing, realism, the mud-rakers, Eugene O'Neill and Am. Drama (to 1939)
  • American Lit after WWII
  • A brief introduction to Australian Literature and Culture

Teaching objective

Students will learn how social developments produce concomitant forms of literary expression, and how literary 'traditions' evolve often in rebellion against what went before.

Prior knowledge expected

Regular participation is highly recommended. You might not pass the course otherwise. PLEASE NOTE: COURSE STARTS OCTOBER 4, 2013
