Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The purpose of this course is to help students understandthe role and fuction of museum learning in nowadays’ learning society. The course reveals the theoretical background and the current international trends of museum learning.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Active participation of students is required.  Applied teaching methods: lecture; discussion; group work; individual research; presentation

Inhalt/e

Beyond revealing the current social, educational and cultural roles, functions and tasks of museums the course focuses on the theory and practise of museum education and it examines the connections between museums and adult education/lifelong learning. Students will also learn about the theory and practise of museum communication and marketing.

  • Historical development of collections/ museums. The history of museum education.
  • New roles, functions and tasks of museums in the 21st century. Museums and the postmodern/ learning society. Cultural and social roles of the museum nowadays. 
  • The impact of COVID-19 on museums.
  • The role of museums in promoting sustainability.
  • Resilience of museums / The role of museums in strengthening resilience.
  • Theoretical background of museum learning. Informal, nonformal and formal learning in museums. Learning theories and learning styles in museum learning.
  • Museums as places for lifelong learning. Museum education methods for diverse age groups/ target groups.
  • The exhibition from the point of view of learning. The role of the museum in interpretation. Telling stories trought objects and images. Methods and tools of interactivity.  
  • Online museum learning - Innovative museum websites. The role of social media in museum learning.
  • Cooperation between educational/health/social etc. institutions and museums.
  • Museum marketing and management. Communication and public relations in museums.
  • Museums and the local community.

Assignment# 1: Museum learning report 

essay, 8-10 pages; About the online learning services offered by museums. The instructor of the course will assign 3 museums for each student. Websites of the 3 assigned museums have to be examined and compared in the essay.  For the examination students receive a specific set of criteria. All listed aspects have to be examined. Proper citation is required; Reference list is required. APA-citation style. Line spacing 1.5; Font size: 12; Times New Roman. Due 15 June 2024

Assignment #2: Class presentation

About the findings of your museum learning report, 15 min. with ppt.  In-person. Due 1 June 2024. Please submit your ppt 5 days prior to your presentation!

Assignment #3: Individual research on the current trends of museum learning

2 pages long papers on each of the topics listed below, plus a 5-minute long online class presentation on each with ppt.

3.1.Museum learning programs for people with dementia. Students have to conduct an independent, online research on the types and main features of dementia programs in museums. Students should collect 3 examples from the international practice of museums. Due 27 April 2024, 10:00-11:30

3.2.Family learning in museums. Students have to conduct an independent, online research on the main features of family learning programs in museums. Students have to collect 3 examples from the international practice of museum learning. Due 11 May 2024, 10:00-11:30

3.3. Museums, migration and diversity. The role of museum learning programs in social inclusion. Students have to conduct an independent, online research. Students have to collect and examine 3 examples from the international practice of museums. Due 25 May 2024, 10:00-11:30

The papers have to summarize the theoretical background of each topic (1st page), and they also have to examine and summarize the main features of the 3 different museum learning programs. (2nd page)

Proper citation is required; Reference list is required. APA-citation stlye.
