Course Description: This course examines the process of economic development for cities, regions, and countries, with a special focus on the role of entrepreneurship and innovation. The sources of competitiveness and growth are identified. Public policies fostering competitiveness and economic development are analyzed in both a historical and contemporary context. Some attention is given to the process of economic development and development strategies in an international context.

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course students will be able to apply the understanding of the process of economic development for cities, regions and countries in both a historical and contemporary context; and evaluate the effectiveness of public policies, and in particular the role of entrepreneurship and innovation, in meeting economic development challenges particular to a region.

POLICY REPORT AND PRESENTATION:

The final assessment is a student project, in which each student, in self-organized teams of four or five people, analyzes the strategic management of a city or region of their choosing. In this project, you are to address the following questions:


  1. What are/were the main economic development problems and challenges? What evidence can you provide documenting these challenges?

  2. What policies did the governing bodies implement to deal with these challenges? Why was this particular set of policies pursued?

  3. How successful were these policies in meeting the economic development challenge particular to that city or region? What evidence can you provide to document the policy’s success or lack thereof?
