Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Students will be introduced to theoretical and practical issues in foreign language teaching. Findings from second language acquisition research and their implications for language learning will be compared with the students' own language learning experiences. A brief introduction will be given to some of the main approaches to foreign language teaching/learning. Moreover, attention will be drawn to ways of teaching pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and the four skills (speaking, writing, reading, listening) in the context of a language pedagogy with a communicative orientation.
Teaching methodology
This seminar will consist of

- synchronous in-person teaching
- small group work activities
Course content
(1) History of English language teaching/learning in German-speaking countries; (2) Hallmarks of communicative language learning/teaching; (3) Second language acquisition theories and their implications for language learning/teaching; (4) Teaching vocabulary; (5) Teaching grammar; (6) Teaching speaking, reading, listening and writing; (5) New directions for language learning/teaching; (6) Language,- literature- and culture-learning.

Examination information
Examination methodology
Final Exam: open questions, will occur on the final session of the seminar.
3 Quizzes: 6 short multiple/single choice quizzes will be provided at random throughout the semester during the sessions. Students can choose the three best grades from the quizzes to count toward their final grade.
Active Participation: This means being attentive in class, regularly asking qualitative content-related questions, and participating in activities during the session.
Examination topic(s)
See topics of course. The final exam questions will come from focus questions provided for each reading of each session. The quiz items will come from the readings as well.
Ample opportunity will be provided in the seminar to prepare for the final exam. More on this will be explained in the first meeting.

10% will be based on active participation
30% on the 3 quizzes (so 10% each quiz)
60% on the final exam
