LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
After completing this course, students should possess the necessary skills to research and synthesize relevant literature in discourse analysis and Conversation Analysis and to apply it to their own research projects.
Lehrmethodik
The course combines mini-lectures, online assignments like contributions to the reflection forum, reading-based group work and discussion, and individual research work leading to an online presentation and final written paper.
Inhalt/e
This course introduces the key tenets of Conversation Analysis, a linguistic discipline devoted to the empirical analysis of authentic, interactive language in use, which focuses on the organization and properties of verbal and non-verbal interaction. Conversations, in CA, are conceived of broadly as highly systematic instances of social interaction characterized by participants taking turns at making semiotic contributions to sequentially unfolding discourse.
After theorizing Conversation Analysis as an approach, we will engage with the methods employed and the metatheoretical questions that play a role in recording and transcribing, or collecting and annotating, written and spoken conversations. On this basis, we will discuss theoretical concepts that can be fruitfully operationalized in linguistic studies of talk-in-interaction, working with pragmatic notions like discourse markers and face management to become able to account for the actions accomplished by interactants through using language in a certain way in a particular social situation.
The course provides an opportunity to take a hands-on, bottom-up approach to critically reflect upon and experiment with data and apply linguistic theory to learn more about the relations between situated linguistic choices, their functions in conversations, and the wider sociocultural context in which these conversations are embedded.
