Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

The lecture "Design of digital circuits" explains important basic knowledge and terms related to digital systems and provides methods for the analysis and design of digital circuits.

Teaching methodology

The structure of the lecture follows a "bottom-up design principle" in which more complex circuits are realized with the help of simpler (and already known) components. Special emphasis is placed on teaching methods for modeling and design. The methods dealt with essentially come from the areas of number systems, logic, set theory, algebra and automata theory and are introduced accordingly. As an essential learning goal, after successfully completing the lecture, students should be able to explain the structure and functioning of a simple processor and to be able to analyze and design the necessary components (switching networks and switching mechanisms).

A separate course complements the lecture and offers the opportunity to deepen the methods dealt with in the lecture. Furthermore, the description of digital circuits is presented using the hardware description language VHDL.
