LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse

This undergraduate course covers the fundamentals of electricity and magnetism for engineering students. Contents includes electrostatics, electric current, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, and electromagnetic waves. Lectures are supplemented by in-class experiments, exercise courses, and tutorials. The textbook “Physics for Scientists and Engineers” and a video lecture are recommended as accompanying material. The course is given in English in the summer semester and also in Germanin the winter semester.
Goals
- You are able to describe (acquire knowledge) and explain (understand) the most important terms, phenomena and laws of electricity and magnetism.
- You are confident in dealing with mathematics, that is used for the analysis in electromagnetism (acquire methods).
- You are able to solve standard problems of electromagnetism analytically (apply) and interpret the solution (analyze)
- You know applications in electrical and information engineering (knowledge) and are able to explain them (understand).
- You are able to recognize and analyze related problems of physics and technology (analyze, synthesize).
Lehrmethodik
Special emphasis is placed on helping students develop a good sense of physical phenomena and their interrelationships in the context of the theory of electromagnetism. Methods of higher mathematics are employed to formally describe and solve practical problems. Electromagnetism in nature and technology is illustrated using examples and experiments.
Inhalt/e
- Introduction and overview
- 1. Electrostatics
- 2. Electric current
- 3. Magnetism
- 4. Electromagnetic induction
- 5. Electromagnetic waves
- Applications in nature and technology
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
Various mathematical methods are used to understand the subject area and to solve the exercises and examination tasks. In particular, vector and integral calculus in three-dimensional space are used. Students are required to have basic skills from algebra and geometry, especially knowledge in vector calculus as well as differential and integral calculus of functions with one variable. Line, area, and volume integrals in three-dimensional space will be introduced and practiced in the lectures and exercise courses. In addition, simple differential equations will be solved.
