Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course students should be able to:

· understand and accurately use a broad range of subject-specific vocabulary, studied both in class and at home.

· make use of information collected from a telephone inquiry for an open position

· prepare and deliver an engaging and informative presentation (based on information gained from the telephone inquiry above)

· write a well-structured email in English accurately, applying the vocabulary and grammar studied throughout the course 

Teaching methodology

Presentations, online tasks, homework tasks, extensive self-study, listening, writing and speaking assessments.

Course content

This foundation course aims to develop students’ ability to communicate effectively in the English-speaking workplace.

Skills that will be developed throughout this course are:
  • presentation skills
  • telephone skills (speaking and listening)
  • writing skills (focus on emails and CVs)
  • grammar (including tense and aspect, pronouns and adverbs)
  • subject-specific vocabulary
Topics that will be covered throughout this course include:
  • self marketing to potential employers
  • telephone inquiries for open positions
  • professional CVs (for international use) 
  • self-presentation at job job interviews in int'l companies

IMPORTANT: due to the ongoing global pandemic, some classes might (have to) be held online. Therefore, students must have access to a working microphone and camera.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

The overall percentage needed to pass this course is 60%. If a student’s progress throughout the semester is deemed inadequate, then the student will receive a failing grade overall.

Full attendance and participation are mandatory. Students should contact the teacher in advance if they are unable to attend a class. If a student’s level of participation is deemed unacceptable, then this will lead to a failing grade overall.
