Intendierte Lernergebnisse
At the end of this course, students will be familiar with:
- the major steps in the development of the EU and its institutions;
- the importance of the EU for border regions such as Carinthia;
- the impact of the war in Ukraine and EU sanctions imposed against Russia
- the EU’s decision-making procedures with a special focus on the ordinary legislative procedure;
- the supporting pillars of the European legal order;
- the relevant EU funding programmes and policies;
- the nature and content of the EU budget as well as the origin and the logic of the “Next Generation EU” recovery plan;
- the principles of the assessment of the economy, effectiveness, efficiency, legality and regularity of EU actions and
- the career opportunities within the institutions and other bodies of the EU.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
The lecturer will present the content of the course by using a PowerPoint presentation, which will be sent out to the students. At the end of each session, students may participate in an interactive wrap-up quiz allowing them to reinforce the content learned.

Impact of global crisis on the EU
Institutions and other bodies of the EU
- Legal order of the EU

Annual and long-term EU budget 2021-2027
- Audit of the EU’s finances
- Careers within the EU
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
There is no previous knowledge required for this course. However, a keen interest in the European project is preferable.

Prüfungsmethode/n
The assessments for this course take place in the form of:
One final exam (60% of final grade)
Four short interactive in-class quizzes (40% of final grade)
In addition, students may earn extra credit for giving a 15-minute (group) presentation and for active participation in the class.

A total minimum score of 50 out of 100 is required to pass the course.
