Intended learning outcomes
This course focuses on practising and developing academic writing skills in English.
By the end of the course, you should have developed awareness of
- good practice in academic work.
- the structure of a research-based essay.
- the common academic resources needed to conduct research.
- the format and function of in-text citations.
- common techniques used to formulate arguments.
- advanced/nuanced markers of an academic register/tone.
- elements of the department-mandated style guide (Chicago Manual of Style).
- subject-specific, academic vocabulary.
- your own grammatical, lexical, and rhetorical weaknesses.
By the end of the course, you should be able to
- write a logically structured, plagiarism-free research-based essay including multiple main points with supporting details.
- consult appropriate academic resources to find relevant information to incorporate into your writing.
- confidently quote and cite academic sources in order to support your own writing.
- employ common techniques to formulate systematic arguments.
- achieve appropriate academic register/tone through lexical and syntactic choices.
- consult the CMOS to determine the correct formatting of citations and quotations.
- select and use appropriate subject-specific, academic vocabulary.
- review and edit your own writing in order to make appropriate improvements.

- Successful completion of Advanced language productive and receptive skills (BA)
OR
- successful completion of the courses in MODULE ENC (Lehramt)

- Development of learning activities into a portfolio: 20%
- Research-based academic paper*: 40%
- Final written examination*: 30%
* Both the research-based academic paper and the final written exam must have a passing grade in order to pass the course overall.
The submission of a complete portfolio including all practice assignments is a prerequisite for receiving a grade.
