LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students will develop a deeper understanding of the ecological, economic, and social issues surrounding climate change and of how these issues and challenges are represented in contemporary American literature. They will also establish connections between defining characteristics of contemporary American culture and their relation to the nation's multifacetted responses to climate change.

Lehrmethodik

Short lecture inputs; detailed analysis and in-class discussion of assigned texts.

Inhalt/e

Climate change is a defining issue of our time and one that triggers emotional responses reaching from apathy to anxiety and aversion. The United States has become particularly notorious for its widespread denialism and unwillingness to participate in concerted attempts to address the issue. In this seminar, we will engage with American climate fiction to investigate how such texts can suggest new ways for thinking about climate change and even afford opportunities for imagining more just and resilient futures. We will read a range of texts, including short stories such as Helen Simpson's “In-Flight Entertainment” and Paolo Bacigalupi’s “The Tamarisk Hunter,” and novels by Octavia Butler, Barbara Kingsolver, Richard Powers, and Cherie Dimaline. In all our readings, we will pay special attention to point of view, characterization, and figurative language, and to how such formal features enhance the effects that those stories produce on their readers.  We will also consider whether these literary texts have the power to make people care about climate change.

Literatur

Cherie Dimaline, The Marrow Thieves. Any edition.

Octavia Butler, Parable of the Sower. Any edition.

Barbara Kingsolver, Flight Behavior. Any edition.

Richard Powers, The Overstory. Any edition.

All other texts will be provided by the instructor.
