LV-Beschreibung
Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Students will practice close reading through short fiction by a variety of American writers and further develop their skills in the systematic analysis of literary texts. They will gain a basic knowledge of the meanings of the short story in American culture, and advance their competence in interpreting texts within their specific socio-cultural and literary historical contexts.
Lehrmethodik
This course is designed to emphasize in-class student participation. Teaching methods include short input lectures, short oral presentations by students, in-class discussion of assigned primary and theoretical texts through close textual analysis and group discussion.
Inhalt/e
This seminar focuses on the rich tradition of the American short story. Intended as a survey of the development of the American national literary genre, we will read a variety of texts from the nineteenth- through the twenty-first centuries, including stories by Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, and others. Our close readings will introduce and practice systematic analysis and interpretation of literary texts, as we discuss the stories’ styles, themes, narrative techniques, and character conceptions. We will interlink our texts with literary historical periods (e.g. Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, and Modernism) and broader cultural contexts to see how the genre and its use reflect major issues of American cultural history.
