Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Students will understand the development of the fantastic genres fantasy, horror, and sci-fi from their origins to their contemporary divisions into subgenres. They will become familiar with key authors, their literary styles, core themes, and representational regimes. They will be able to critically situate and academically discuss genre fiction texts.
Lehrmethodik
Short lecture inputs, plenary discussion of theoretical and critical texts; student presentations.
Inhalt/e
Definition and development of the genres of the fantastic. Classification of subgenres. Minority voices in genre literature. Key authors of the genres.
Literatur
Students will be required to read the texts they present (chosen from an open list of recommendations).
All other texts will be made available on Moodle.
Prüfungsinformationen
Prüfungsmethode/n
The final grade is an aggregate of:
20% - Active participation in class during discussions and analyses, as well as thorough preparation for class work.
40% - Student presentation on one of the relevant texts and write-up (1000 words per person).
40% - Critical, academic paper on a text from another of the three core genres of the fantastic (pdf, 3000 words) to be handed in by the end of February 2023.
Failing one of the three pillars of assessment fails the entire course!
Prüfungsinhalt/e
Theories of genre fiction, important authors and their specific contributions to the genres; students can freely choose text of final paper within the framework of the class topic.
Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe
Quality and quantity of information, precision and depth of analysis, structure and quality of argument, quality and quantity of secondary sources used.
