Course Information
Intended learning outcomes
Participants will get insights on the complex relation between language, culture and thought.
They will acquire key concepts and important notions that will allow them to analyse language taking into account its cognitive and cultural dimensions.
Teaching methodology
Lecture inputs.
Interactive lecture and group work.
Course content
In class, we will consider and critically discuss the core literature that looks at the interconnectedness of language, culture and thought. We will explore the nature of meaning as mental representation, cultural habit and linguistic practice. We will also look at language with the aim of identifying emergent cultural conceptualizations and comparing distinctive worldviews through the analysis of different case studies.
The topics of the course include the following:
- speaking as a culturally constructed act
- politeness and honorifics
- cultural forms of narration
- linguistic relativity
- kinship
- color
- space
- time
- quantities
- objects and substances
- grammatical gender
- cultural models and metaphors
