Intendierte Lernergebnisse
Students will learn
- to understand the beneficial and destructive power of language and discourse and how language and discourse influence how we think, feel and act (in the context of our ecosystem)
- core linguistic concepts and methods from an ecolinguistic perspective
- to apply these linguistic concepts & methods to critically read and understand discourses on ecological topics such as climate (crisis), energy (crisis), globalization, sustainability, anthropomorphism etc.
- to work with (linguistic) texts and discourses
- to carry out small linguistic projects (collect data, analyze data and present findings)
Lehrmethodik
Theoretical input on
- linguistic theory (relevant concepts for ecolinguistic discussions such as metaphor and framing theory)
- linguistic practice (data collection, data analysis...)
Group discussion of texts, examples etc.
Small linguistic (group) projects on topics such as climate crisis, energy crisis, globalization, veganism or sustainability
Inhalt/e
- linguistic concepts such as appraisal theory, metaphor theory, ideology and framing
- methods of data collection, data analysis (e.g. critical discursive psychology, corpus linguistics) and presentation of findings
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
Basic concepts of linguistics. What is expected in addition to prior knowledge, is an interest in the topics and a willingness to critically engage with them.

Beurteilungskriterien/-maßstäbe
To successfully pass this seminar, students are required to
- actively participate in class discussions and do the prep reading
- give a presentation (possibly group presentation) (how to give a presentation and what is expected from a presentation will be discussed in class)
- write a seminar paper on a selected topic (how to write a seminar paper and what is expected from a seminar paper will be discussed in class
