Course Information

Intended learning outcomes

Students will learn about translation theory and its history & relevant terminology relating to the field; be able to identify and analyze translation problems/errors (specifically between German and English); and be able to describe the translation process and the role of the translator.

Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools

  • Lecture (some sessions may take place asynchronously)
  • In-class group discussion
  • Moodle-based assignments/discussion
  • Sample practice translation tasks

Recordings or supplementary explanations will be made available as warranted.

Prior knowledge expected

Students are not expected to have any knowledge of translation for this course.

Literature

All required reading and viewing materials will be provided on Moodle. If so desired, a reader of course texts can also be made available via the ÖH printing service (price of the reader TBA).

Examination methodology

Moodle-based written examination based on readings, PowerPoint slides, and lectures.

See course content. In general, students should be familiar with the theories, terminology, and persons discussed in the course.

The first sitting of the exam will take place in the last regularly scheduled class session. The second and third exam sittings will be announced in class. Be sure to sign up on ZEUS for the sitting you prefer.

Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations

A passing grade of at least sixty percent of the material on the final examination is required to pass this course. This percentage may change marginally based on changes to exam questions/types/points.
